During our opening hours, emergency cases are always seen as a priority. If you are able to contact the surgery, via phone, prior to your arrival (we do appreciate this may not be possible in all emergency cases) this will ensure we are prepared to provide the treatment needed as efficiently as possible.
Due to our independent status and small team, we do not offer out of hours emergency care as standard, however, if you contact the surgery on our usual number (01462 436963) you will be given a phone number on our answerphone message, this will divert to one of our vet's mobile numbers- they will be happy to help if they are available. The other number given on the answerphone is for our official out of hours provider at the Royal Veterinary College (AL9 7TA). They will offer over the phone advice and appointments if required. In the unfortunate event that you should need an urgent appointment out of hours, they will email us a copy of the clinical notes to ensure your pets records are kept up to date and treatment plans are continued efficiently if required.
Our friendly and knowledgeable team of nurses are on hand daily, offering clinics for routine treatments such as weight clinics, nail clips, microchipping and routine post-operative checks and general advice.
We are proud to share that we are a certified ‘Cat Friendly Clinic’ practice. We understand that a trip to the vets can be extremely stressful, particularly for cats, and so we have opted to take the necessary steps to ensure our clients and their feline companions have as comfortable experience as possible. This includes separate cat and dog waiting areas, with a designated cat tree for comfort whilst waiting, ‘Cat only’ clinics on a Tuesday afternoon and additional training completed by members of our team on working with cats using appropriate handling techniques to minimise stress.
We offer high quality radiography, using our in-house modern x-ray machine, which we are able to use to aid in diagnosis of injury and illnesses.
We are also able to offer dental x-rays with our separate machine. Stuart has a passion for radiography and has a separate qualification in the subject which resulted in receiving an award for best case presented for that year in the UK.
Ultrasound is a brilliant way to safely investigate the internal organs and create imaging of these internal body structures. Our updated equipment can confirm pregnancy, investigate diseases of the liver and kidneys and scan the heart.
Regular dental checks are essential in order to maintain healthy gums and teeth. We offer initial dental checks to provide advice and preventative measures as well as dental surgery to treat any oral conditions. We are also able to provide dental x-rays during the procedure to determine the health of the roots of the teeth.
More commonly seen dental conditions include:
Periodontal disease is often referred to as gum disease. Initially this disease only affects the gum, but if left untreated will also affect other dental supporting structures.
Gingivitis is inflammation of the gum caused by an accumulation of plaque which triggers inflammation of the gums. Plaque is a combination of bacteria, food and saliva which creates a sticky substance that adheres to the tooth. If the plaque is removed then the inflammation can resolve, however if left untreated this can subsequently lead onto more serious issues which can ultimately be irreversible and lead to tooth loss.
Attachment loss is unable to be determined until the pet is examined under a general anaesthetic. A visual exam and the use of probes is used in order to check the ligament attachment to the tooth and surrounding bones are assessed using dental radiography.
The benefits of using dental radiography are indicated below;
To study the pathology hiding below the gingiva or inside the tooth
Follow progression of periodontal disease
Evaluate an area where teeth are missing
To support treatment options
For the use in post operative confirmation
A full set of dental x-rays will determine the health of the roots of the teeth unseen by the eye. In fact, our first case here proved the value of dental radiography as a tooth on the surface appeared fine but actually there was a rotten root. Having found this using dental radiography we were able to remove the tooth avoiding another anaesthetic at a later date.
We offer blood testing using our in house facilities which allow us to run a variety of samples. including haematology and biochemistry, snap tests for canine and feline specific lipase, urine analysis and thyroid monitoring. The majority of results are received the same day for us to discuss treatment options promptly.
For more specific cases we are able to use an external laboratory for blood testing. Results are interpreted by their specialist team and are sent directly to our surgery and automatically attached to your pets record with any relevant advice.
We have invested in specialised equipment and our team have undertaken extensive advanced training in both orthopaedic and soft tissue surgery.

We provide neutering procedures and treatments for a range of species to prevent breeding and certain health conditions. Our vets and nurses are happy to offer advice to discuss the appropriate options for your pet.
The majority of our full time vets are certified to issue Animal Health Certificates for pet travel. Certain treatments may be required to travel with your pet, so please speak to a member of the team before you book your trip to ensure we have all the information and requirements arranged for your journey.
A microchip is roughly the size of a grain of rice which is implanted under the skin of the scruff of the neck. This carries a number unique to your pet, which can be read by a portable scanner. This can be implanted by both vets and nurses at the surgery.
Current legislation dictates that all cats and dogs must be microchipped- dogs by 8 weeks and cats by 20 weeks of age.
If you or your pet are unable to attend the surgery we can organise a home visit depending on the issue. Some conditions are more appropriately treated at the surgery to provide us with a wider range of equipment and diagnostic tools. If you would like to arrange a potential house visit, please contact the surgery and a vet will happily discuss your case.
